How Anurag’s Fight Against His Weaknesses Turned His Life Around

Life often throws challenges our way, but it’s how we face them that defines our future. For Anurag, a young boy from Mangolpuri, Delhi, the journey from self-doubt to self-confidence wasn’t easy. But his determination to overcome his weaknesses and seize opportunities transformed his life in ways he never imagined.

As the eldest of four siblings in a family struggling to make ends meet, Anurag’s life was far from easy. His father, a factory worker, could barely afford the rent for their small, cramped room. The weight of responsibility rested heavily on Anurag’s shoulders, and the future seemed uncertain.

One day, ETASHA’s team of Vocational Training Program (VTP) came to his neighbourhood. They offered training to help young people learn skills and find jobs. The idea of stepping out of his comfort zone was daunting. But the persistent efforts of the ETASHA’s community team—through constant motivation, inspiration, and even home visits—convinced him to take the leap.

When he joined the program, he was shy, reluctant, and prone to nervousness. He would often fumble while speaking and struggled to express himself. But the VTP team saw potential in him that he couldn’t see in himself. They encouraged him to participate actively in class, ask questions, and step out of his shell.

One of the most transformative moments came when Anurag was encouraged to play the lead role in a Nukkad Natak (street play). The dedication of the team and Anurag’s own determination helped him overcome his fears and grow in confidence.

After finishing the training, Anurag started going for job interviews. His first attempt at securing a job at McDonald’s didn’t go as planned—he was rejected. But Anurag didn’t let this setback define him. He prepared harder and approached his second interview with unwavering determination. His perseverance paid off, and he cleared the final interview, securing the job.

However, life had more challenges in store for Anurag. In December last year, his elder brother passed away, leaving the family devastated. The loss was unbearable, but Anurag stepped up as the sole breadwinner for his family. Despite the emotional and financial strain, he remained steadfast in his responsibilities.

Recently, during a mobilization activity in Mangolpuri, the VTP team had the opportunity to meet Anurag’s parents. Despite the hardships they had endured, they expressed immense pride in their son. “Aaplogo ne Anurag ko kabil bana diya, bahut bahut dhanyawad,” they said, thanking the team for helping Anurag become capable and self-reliant.

Stories like Anurag’s inspire us to keep striving, to keep believing in the power of hope, and to continue empowering those who need it the most. Every small step we take towards uplifting others can lead to a ripple effect of positive change, transforming not just individual lives but entire communities.
